My wife and I are looking to move to the Scotch Plains, Fanwood area and were curious as to the availability of parking as I understand there is a wait list for parking spots up to 6 years long at some NJ Transit stations. Also is there a bus on 22 that goes to Newark Penn and/or Manhattan with stops by Glenside-Mountain Avenue? I would probably take the Path from Newark, but my wife needs to take the train into the city. We would prefer to drive to the train, but if parking is not an option, the bus may have to due. We do want to keep our commutes to around an hour door to door and figure 10 minutes for subway/walking commute in Manhattan.
Lastly, we have been looking around the 22 area of Scotch Plains North and South of 22 (Canterburry and near Mountainside). Does anyone have opinions on that area? Is there a particular area of Scotch Plains that is not so good? Seemed like a lot families around and seemed nice and "woodsy."
Sorry I cant help you with the commute part, but I can say that there is no bad section of Scotch Plains. Its a quiet and safe community. And the same can be said for Mountainside.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Machinist. That's what we hear, and nice to hear someone else confirm it. Anyone have any info on wait times at the train station? We really like the area, but dropping off and picking up at the train station doesn't seem to be an option and we would like to secure a monthly pass if possible. Any advice, knowledge?
My wife and I moved to Fanwood during the summer and the parking lot issue was a big deal. We did an extensive search of Scotch Plains and Fanwood and finally settled on a house within walking distance to the train as the parking permit wait can be long and I need to use the train to get to my office in Manhattan. From time to time, a couple of permits do become available on a first come first serve basis but are usually gone very quickly. (You can, however, pay $3.25 for a daily spot on the southside of the station.) Lastly, since the station is in Fanwood, they give priority to Fanwood residents first.
My wife takes the bus and there are multiple stops in Scotch Plains and Fanwood. Check out NJ Transit for route 113 and 114. My wife takes the 113X which is an express to mid-town.
Lastly, there are no bad areas in Scotch Plains or Fanwood but the areas near Route 22 and Terrill Road are generally not as nice as the areas further south and east. Best of luck and I hope that this helps.
