I grew up in Monmouth County, specifically Marlboro, and this fits all your needs. Great school district and only getting better. The commute to Manhattan will be between 60-90 minutes but easier if you take the train (take out of the Matawan train station). The housing market is very robust in Marlboro. Houses under $500K are gone in less than 30 days and sometimes only a couple of weeks. I would definitely look in Marlboro for sure.

I would say there is no way you can make it to Manhattan in 60 minutes if you are using the train. Express train alone is about 60 minutes. Then need to account for driving to train, walking to platform and then once you get into the city getting to your office. Even if you are near Penn it's likely at the least 10 minutes to get off the train and get to work. Think your 90 minutes is much more realistic.
Even the bus from somewhere like cheese quake park and ride is 60 minutes (rarely the 40 they post because of traffic). Worse if you take bus up route 9.
I'd look at River Edge in Bergen County. Short trip to NYC, in your price range, great schools, safe, accessible and abundant shopping in nearby towns and an overall great place to raise a family.

Thanks. We actually visited some of the towns on the Main/Bergen and Pascack Valley lanes, and River Edge and Oradell were 2 of the towns we visited. RE seemed like a nice town and its quite doable with our budget. I am wondering how far does one need to be from Kinderkamack Rd to not get the train noise. Also, it seemed that he homes were at a pretty good elevation from the river, so floodin shouldn't really be an issue, at least on the other side of Kinderkamack st.
I'm a Ridgewood resident and I guess I drink the typical Ridgewood cool-aide. I think we live the the best town in NJ. I have 3 kids and the town offers so much! The best schools in NJ, great downtown, a lot of family activities and a beautiful, tight knit community!

Welcome to the boards! Ridgewood is a wonderful town, no question. But it's also insanely expensive (and has gotten even more so over the past few decades). Housing in the town is well beyond the financial reach of the vast majority of people.
