Anybody here have experience with these?

I am trying to replace about 400sq ft of old carpet that is currently sitting on my mainlevel concrete slab. It's 2 rooms. One is bare concrete and another has the old thin vinyl tiles laid from god knows how long ago.

So question:
1) Laminate or vinyl plank? - I want vinyl because I have a dog and dont want to worry about water damage. Laminate is not water friendly

2) Any stores/brands you would recommend? I am in Woodbridge, NJ. I looked at both Lowes and HD but neither carries a lot of choices.

3) Anyone have experience doing this on their own or would you recommend a professional? I am very handy when it comes to working around the house but this will be first 'floor' related project.

Any other advice?

What about 2x2 replaceable carpet squares? The dog messes up a portion and they pull out and drop in new ones as needed. How wet are we talking?

I want to avoid carpet as much as possible. There is an entrance to the yard on the main level and he goes in and out all day long. One of the main reasons to replace the carpet is because he has ruined it from tracking mud into the house over the last couple of years. If it is a hard floor then I can simply wipe it clean.

UPDATE: I am now leaning towards laminate (despite the water issues). I found that laminate with an underlayment will be much easier than vinyl planks.
