However...I do have another question re: Craigslist. Maybe MQ can answer this since she had success with it.

If my daughter were to put an ad on Craigslist, how much info should she put in it (besides the obvious like number of occupants and her requirements)? What else should she add?
Perhaps she might want to assure potential landlords that she's gainfully employed or say that she's a commuter. I worked in the city so I said I needed to be within reach of a train line (because trains were my best commute option).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Edison / Highland Park area. It has some cheap options and Edison is a direct train line to the city. commute should be about 1 hr.

^^^^Thank you! In my search, where I ended up just going around in a circle, I did come across Highland Park. I didn't see anything in her price range that met her criteria.

Since this thread got bumped up some --- I did want to add that I started looking at Craigslist. There was something in Kearny that met her criteria but on greatschools.org the schools were rated as 3 or 4

I also saw a listing that clearly had to be a scam. it was a nice looking single family house in Bergen County, right in her price range. However, what got my radar up was the photos had a "watermark" indicating that they were from NJ MLS and were very grainy.

I mentioned to her that she also put her own ad up on Craigslist. She said it was a good idea but I'll see if she tries it

Edison would be a better bet. Highland park is more expensive and doesn't have a train station. Edison is more affordable and has a train station. You ought to be able to find something in south Edison within your limits.

I was in Hasbrouck Heights twice recently to get new glasses made. It's a nice little town with a small downtown and some amazing views of the city. Off route 17 between Hackensack and Lyndhurst. Worth adding to your list, perhaps.

My daughter really likes Hasbrouck Heights and would love to live there. IMO, her best bet for Hasbrouck Heights would be to find an apartment in a 2 or 3 family building. I've told her that she probably would need to use a realtor to find something suitable. As I mentioned before, she doesn't want to have to pay a commission.

She's making a small bit of progress. When her lease is up in a few months, she is going to ask the rental office if they'll let her go month-to-month instead of making her sign a new lease. That way, it would allow the kids to finish out the school year in their current schools.

Treetops Apartments - Highland Park, NJ 08904 | Apartments for Rent
Treetops apartments - about 2 miles from edison train station, community has a shuttle - it's not quite what she is looking for but her kids get to go to a good school district.

I was going to suggest Edison, but see someone beat me to it.
What about Iselin, Woodbridge, or Piscataway? I think they have decent schools and rental options in these towns? Also, maybe too far out for some (but more convenient than Branchburg), but your daughter may find what she is looking for in North, South, or East Brunswick, and maybe Old Bridge.
