The only homes in NJ you see with gates are $1 million+ homes. And as JerseyGirl415 said, gates can easily be jumped. They are really a false sense of security.
If security is a high priority, a camera system or burglar alarm would be a much better investment. Camera systems have become quite sophisticated. I have a neighbor who has video cams around his house. He has a whole system installed for $1,400. When motion is detected, he gets an email to his phone. Not to mention the cameras themselves are usually enough of a deterrent for ill intentioned people to stay away.
One thing I definitely believe is prudent is to not be the most expensive or fancy home in your neighborhood. In other words, if you are the only Mercedes parked in a lot with Hyundais, who is the car thief going to go after?
