Surely that would depend on which people you ask. Neither has the reputation of being upscale, if that's what you mean. But if you are concerned about reputation, why choose either one, especially if you drive?

I don't know Bayonne at all, but I live about 20 mins from Hackensack and have been there for hospital and doctor visits (the hospital is excellent - all our drs are in its network), a bit of shopping, and to attend events at its ice rink where some world-class competitive figure skaters train (as well as skaters of all ages and levels, and I'm sure hockey teams as well). It seems kind of run down to me, but there are pleasant areas. There is a lot of traffic because it's such a medical center. I am not sure it is the best place to raise a family, and I am not sure how much excitement there is for younger singles or couples.

Why not a prettier town with somewhat more going on, like Nutley or Teaneck? Rutherford or Hasbrouck Heights if you want quiet (but maybe you don't)?

Maywood is right next to Hackensack and its a very nice town. If you don't have kids, I would still keep Hackensack in mind, as it has easy access to highways and there are some up and coming restaurant/bars in the area. Train stops into Hoboken/Secaucus as well.
