Newton has very good schools IMO. I have a soon to be 13 y/o who's in Halsted M.S. When we first moved into town a few years back, we were going to send him to St. Joe's but all of our neighbors recommended the local school systems and he ended up going to Merriam Ave Elementary and I must say I haven't been dissapointed of my decision, the classroom teacher/student ratio is very good, they have excellent programs and activities for the students. Teachers genuinely (sp) care about the students and vice versa, a short story, local popular teacher gets fired for been short a credit or 2 of a certificate (it was a board of ed contract negotiating maneuver that backfired) Students rallied in support of the teacher and demanded teacher been brought back. it worked. Anyhow, there you go, that's my 2 cents.

note- sussex is very isolated from ny suburbs. you might as well commute to scranton for the same time as it takes to Wayne. Look into some info; Does Port Jervis have jobs for you?

I am in Montague at the border of Milford PA and Port Jervis NY. It doesn't get much more rural than where I am at. The "center" of town is 5 or 6 buildings and nothing else. Whatever we want/need we go to Milford and Matamoras PA. $350K will get you a huge place in this town. The commute to wayne is ok depending on what time you leave. I work in Florham Park, I leave at 6am and I'm here around 7-7:15. today I got here in an hour without speeding, just very little traffic.
Sussex is a beautiful place but my wife and I are still adapting to it. Very quiet and peaceful. The views are amazing here, everyone is nice. The winters are rough in the whole county though, it gets cold.
