We are looking to buy a home in kinnelon but have heard from quite a few people that bears are very often seen. I grew up in Oakland, where there are also bears but I am getting the vibe that they are much more frequent in kinnelon. Because we have a young child, I can’t help but to be a bit concerned over this even though I know they don’t tend to bother people. I don’t mind seeing one occasionally in the woods or anything, but if they are frequently walking through peoples backyards in the day time, I’m not sure if that’s something I am comfortable with. Any current residents have any insight as to how frequently they see bear in their yards? Once a month? Once a week? Or less than that? Thanks in advance!

The thing about bear towns is that you have to find one that’s just right. Not too little bears. Not too many bears. Just right.

I don't think you have any reason to be concerned. Bears are extremely timid. Secure your trash, fence in your backyard, buy motion sensor lights. Bear attacks are extremely rare, and they usually involve people making bad mistakes.

They're definitely walking through people's backyards. I mean, they don't understand what property lines mean. I'm not trying to be snarky

Where did you grow up in Oakland? Over by RRR there were a lot of bear sightings when my parents lived there. On the other side of the river and backing to all that state land. They go down to the river, can't blame them. I think the other side of 202 didn't have the same issues

I remember The Newark Bears, but I never before heard of The Kinnelon Bears.
In what league do they play?

The bears in NJ are no trouble. It’s the muggers you have to be concerned with.
