I have several heavy oil heat iron radiators that were removed during some construction and they are still in the house taking up space.
Are there any resources or businesses that purchase these items as opposed to me discarding them? I'm in the Central/Northern NJ area.
Those radiators are worth some money! You can either try to sell them on ebay or take them to a junk yard and collect the scrap metal cash. We often end up having to go to a junk yard to find them to use as replacements for older homes as obviously they don't make them anymore. They have value!
If they're really ornate they might bring some $$$ from someone restoring an old house. Otherwise, I believe cast iron is going for around $0.08 a pound or $8.00 per hundred pounds. I once found some old radiators out in front of a house that was being refurbished on my way home from work. I spoke with the contractor who said if I could lift them they were mine so I loaded them all (eight total) into the back of my truck and headed to the scrap yard. Mind you I drive an F-350 with helper springs which means I can carry a little less than 3,000 lbs safely in the bed-my rear end was sagging I got $225.00 and cast was going for $0.06 per pound at the time-you do the math
Thanks for the info! They are way too heavy to move so I've got to figure something out.
Try calling a local scrap yard, see if they pickup. They may not give you anything for them if they have to pick them up, but at least you'll get rid of them.
If you really don't want to try to scrap them yourself, just put them out on the curb. My guess is they will be gone within half a day. I casually look for scrap on the side of the road (lawn chairs, old gas grills, copper pipe, appliances) on my way to and from work. With scrap prices as high as they are these days, if someone puts stuff out the night before garbage day, by 7:30 AM when I'm driving by it's long gone. The price of copper is so high (many recyclers are paying upwards of $3.00 per pound) that many cities have formed "copper theft task forces" because thieves will literally rip pipes off of walls (leaving the water running), steal electrical equipment from substations (and frequently kill/severely injure themselves in the process, and even yank plaques off of gravestones.

I think you must be related to my equipment operator... he's just as bad. Has scraps of copper tied in a loop and hanging off of his backhoe all the time..laying in his truck, etc. I call him Mr. Scraps!
