Englewood schools are terrible unless there is a charter that appeals to you. Dumont is ok but taxes will be high and it will take you longer than 35 minutes on the bus at prime time. Fairlawn is a good option. Glen rock is excellent if you can get something in your price range - not sure of commute time. Maywood may be an option but only before Hackensack high school attendance and bus commute. Have you looked at Rutherford, schools are ok.
Good to know about Englewood. I have not looked into Rutherford, but I keep reading a lot about it in these forums.
River Edge and Oradell might work. They are on the Pascack Valley Line (train service) and also have bus service. The towns have excellent schools and houses that might fit in your price range.
If you take a look at towns that are served by private bus lines, like Lakewood, they'll take you in to Port Authority. PA puts you a little closer to your job, saving a few minutes, and the private busses are a much shorter commute than NJ Transit busses (for the most part).
Cranford, that Jay mentioned, is a very nice town. New Providence has a handful of homes in your price range and the schools are usually in the top 30. Scotch Plains might squeeze into the 75 minute time as well, but not much further out than that.

Check out Aberdeen/Matawan/Cliffwood NJ area. It’s an hour commute to mid town but you get a lot more bang for your buck. Great school and Cliffwood is specifically up and coming. Check out this massive townhome for 400k
Nope. You will have to go further out, longer commute to be at or under your budget. Lots of blue ribbon schools in west parts of NJ. stick to areas close to 78/NJ Transit RR lots that dont require permit paking.

I, like a lot of other people moving from NYC apparently, had no idea how expensive it was in some parts of Jersey. Just need to figure out now what I am willing to compromise on.

Yes, it's a common misconception with some New Yorkers that it's inexpensive here. You'd think "state with highest population density in the country" would be a clue given the basic rule of supply and demand, but the perception still exists.
You can definitely get less expensive rentals in NJ than Manhattan, but the trade-off is commuting cost and time.

I never thought too much about it-- other than the assumption that it couldn't possibly be anywhere near as expensive as here. I was definitely living in a fantasy world.
The costs are remarkably similar. In New York you're paying for convenience: a cab ride or metrocard fare home at any time of day and 30-60 minutes away for the most part.
In NJ you're paying for space: a yard, three bedrooms, a second bath, less concern about shuffling schools through the years, and 60-90 minutes away.
