I am looking for the country feel of Sussex County. I'm aware of the high taxes/etc. Born and raised in NJ, just looking for opinions from the board. I've seen some nice houses in both Wantage and Vernon Townships. Can anyone with knowledge of either tell me a couple of things?

Where do you shop for groceries? What do you typically do for fun? I appreciate it!

I shop at ShopRite for groceries, I find it is the best value among regular supermarkets. As far as what to do for fun I guess that would depend on your age range, when I was in my 20's I would of said hang out in bars and drink beer but now everything revolves around what is fun for the kids.

Thanks for the replies. From what I've been able to research Wantage is a bit more rural than Vernon? Any thoughts on pros and cons on both towns?

They are both rural and you will have one hell of a commute for a job with decent wages.
Depending on WHERE in Wantage you would go to Franklin shoprite which is not around the corner, there used to be an A&P there on rte 23 but don't think it's there anymore and don't know if another supermarket went in the building, further north in Wantage, your options for shopping would be Middletown NY. One poster said Sussex meat packing, that is just a butcher you are not going to find every day groceries there.

Vernon you will be sandwiched between Hamburg NJ and Warwick NY, again it's rural.
As Gerania asked, what is your idea of fun? Can't answer that until we know.

You may want to also look at Montague, it's north on rte 23, rural, property prices not insane and your shopping options would be in Port Jervis NY

Thanks for the replies. Out here we are used to basically having everything 15+ minutes away. For fun? We tend to drive 30+ minutes to different area malls, etc. Movies. Or, just chop some wood and throw it in the fire place and watch some netflix. nature walks, hiking, biking, etc. We have some land, and a dog as well.

If you like the deep south, then Sussex County comes closest to matching that, at least in NJ.

The obvious thing to do for fun around there is skiing.

There's also tons of good hiking up that way.

Not so much in the way of culture or food, but if you want that, it's not far away.
