I think you have to be a certain age to feel it, but NJ has easily been one of the most mocked states, I would say along with California and Alabama.

Images of toxic waste, uneducated residents with thick accents, and the Elizabeth portion of the NJ Turnpike, and of course, Jersey Shore come to mind.

I do think that today's reality of the state (highly educated, high culture, HIGH cost of living) has caused that reputation to die a bit. But it's still a source of pride for me, lol.

I was watching Superman (1978) yesterday and I don't know if anybody remembers, but Lex Luthor hijacks two nuclear missiles, and aims one at California, and one at Hackensack, NJ.

When the Army commanders realize the destination of the second missile is NJ, they ask to themselves "What's in NJ?"

To which the whole room shrugs in an unknowing manner.

There's no clip online of the scene.

Anybody have other examples?

On the old Honeymooners TV program, Ralph Kramden would occasionally say something derisive about Bayonne, and that would be followed by gales of laughter from the audience.

That's ok,,, we have enough population density and traffic without all the extra people that would flock here if they knew this is "home".

I do remember that scene!

Did you ever see Toxic Avenger?

For those who never have, it's a movie about "New Jersey's Only Superhero".

The gist of the story is that this bullied geek jumps out of a window after being set up by the mean kids, and he lands in an open drum of bubbling green toxic waste in the back of a truck and turns into this horrible looking but unbelievably strong creature who runs around fighting crime. He even falls in love with a blind girl who keeps tripping over things and falling flat on her face.

NJ worked hard to earn that reputation so deserved!

Look what they did they elected Murphy!!!!

Nj has allowed politicians to tax them to death and even vote for people who promise to raise their tax!

No other evidence is required, no defense can be mounted that would change NJ's reputation that coincides with Nj being last of lists of best places and first on lists of worst places.

A great big thanks to NJ voters!

You need to get out of the state more. I lived in NJ for 27 years and it was a very good quality of life. I'm currently in southwest FL. You don't know stupid until you've come to the south. In addition, there aren't enough doctors in general practice in this area. You can find a specialist, but if you require a referral, good luck getting a GP. They're all "not taking new patients". With the influx down here, they don't have to.

Oh, and one more thing. Everyone down here LOVES their guns. Don't even think about looking at someone or giving them the finger on the road. They will shoot you and then claim they feared for their life. Stand your ground law.

How I Met Your Mother has quite a few scenes where they clown NJ, but this was one of the most memorable for me:
