I come from the Midwest originally and noticed the steaks they sell here in Bergen County is just AWFUL. why is that? I would expect the quality of meat to be high with the high income demographic. I mean, I used to hit Walmart in PA and get great 2lb tomahawk ribeyes or 1.5lb strips full of fat and flavor.
I went to a King's because my neighbor told me they have great steaks, they look so bad. Why??
I think part of it may be that the high-income demographic also translates to more health-consciousness. People want leaner steak, sacrificing flavor for more healthful food choices.
Your promotion of high-fat PA-Walmart steaks sounds like an invitation to post those horrible Internet pictures of badly-dressed fat Walmart shoppers.
At any rate, if you want prime, well-marbled steaks, ya gotta pay for 'em. Go to an independent butcher shop rather than a supermarket chain.
I've found King's steak to be good (but hella expensive); I'm not sure how you can tell they're bad by looking at them. Shoprite not so much (often lacking in flavor). Both sell Choice-grade, so we're not talking lean here.

Higher income demo usually means great steak houses. These people want people to cook for them, and not do themselves.
Most supermarket steaks be bad around here.
But NYC has great Steakhouses. NJ has some like the River Palm Terrace. Our Diners usually have good steaks.
Go to a butcher maybe? We have two in town and the difference between them and a supermarket is, well, marked.
Agreed. Not sure why you would go looking for good steak at a supermarket or a Wal-Mart in the first place That said, the butchers at our local Shop-Rite will custom cut one for you if they're not busy. I had them cut me a couple of bone-in ribeyes 1.5" thick a couple of weeks ago that came out great. Otherwise we get our meats from Rambo's in Califon or Arctic Foods in Washington. Our neighbor down the road is finishing his pigs soon (we went in on half of a pig this year)-really looking forward to that.
