Hundreds of deaths occurred at nursing homes throughout NJ. They could've stopped it if they ramp up protocols. They should've known back in February when it started in Seattle that over 70 deaths from just one place.
I drive by 2 nursing homes on my way to the markets and always point out to my wife that none of the workers were wearing any PPEs last month and only started to wear them the last 2 weeks. Judging by the kind of people that work at the nursing homes. It doesn't seem like they have good standards nor care about the people they serve.

Yes I agree. Federal regulations have been loosened over the past several years. People don’t think of places like this when they hear business deregulation, but these are businesses too. But I will say I feel they’ve been left behind in the quest for PPE. Feds should have taken charge of PPE and bid and distributed it. Heck they should be ordering factories to make it.
They need to pay staff more too. CNAs risking their lives with inadequate PPE for $12 an hour. Why should they show up to work when they can make $17 at Amazon warehouse? CNA Pay hasn’t risen in years despite chronic shortages.
Significant cuts to Medicaid over the past several years has impacted homes too. The profit margin is razor thin and they only make profits by cutting back on food quality, staff and supplies.
We need more than nursing home reform. We need massive investment in public health vs the death by a thousand cuts to all categories of public health over the years. Seems like an easy place to trim another few million from when you’re trying to make up for lost revenue from billionaire tax cuts, but it all comes home to roost when there’s a public health crisis.

manager turnover very high so consistency is non existent
must keep an inspection book in the lobby and still the places are abysmal .
one place had a igloo cooler with ice chips in the hallway with a scoop attached to a cotton string, good luck with that set up
one let a stray cat come and go to visit patients.
hire non english speaking aides to defeat the purpose of labeling slippers and laundry notes, etc.
rehab last coincidentally as long as your insurance holds, not a minute sooner
your personal doctor has to apply to visit in a nursing home so instead you get what ever doctor the nursing home has under contract
Go to rehab, why isn't mom being rehabbed after 4 days in rehab? Oh, we don't have a wheel chair available
She complained of pain so we didn't want to take her to rehab. What??????????? why not give her some tylenol, we can't. you'd have to ask her doctor for tylenol. so if I didin't say something mom would be in rehab and not be rehabbed until she faded away or was overcome by some infection in that breeding ground called a rehab/nursing home.
scam to take a pt to a specialist by ambulance, just transport is about 1,300$$ for a 5 miles trip in some areas. then find out the specialist never even touched the patient for examination
what the elected legislators let pass for care in nursing homes for the elderly is a crime.
Hey NJ is a sanctuary state where we care about the welfare of illegal aliens to the exclusion of NJ residents.

One has nothing to do with the other. In any case, as someone with over 20 years of experience working in geriatric rehab I can tell you New Jersey nursing homes are better than nursing homes in a lot of other states. A nursing home I worked for in Houston for about six months would have been closed by the state here. Many southern states have even more lax regulations. Ours are actually pretty strict. The problems come because the inspection agencies across public health areas have been cut, and there just arent enough to watch closely.
But I have seen the state come in a lot in homes here. If a person has fallen more than a few times, they will come out and it will be a huge deal and they will demand action plans and get them. In Houston I never saw people from the state and truly some of the things that went on there were borderline abusive.
The profit margin is so thin for Medicaid-dependent homes that many are going to close and they are already predicting a pretty severe shortage of homes in poor rural areas especially. I read a sad article about a man with dementia who had to go to a home 200 miles from his elderly wife, because that was the closest available Medicaid bed. There is really a limited amount of change that can happen in these homes without investment in Medicaid.
IMO it is not about stricter rules or enacting punishments. It is about needing to truly invest in public health not just in New Jersey but in the country.
