I'm looking to move my family of 4 from Querns into NJ. Both my husband and I work in midtown Manhattan and my children (ages 6 & 9) are in gifted programs in a public school in Queens. We're a biracial family and want a safe and inclusive neighborhood. Im struggling to find the right neighborhood for us because I don't know much about NJ. Im looking to be roughly 30-40min from Manhattan by transportation. I want a good school district that offers a diverse curriculum. I also need a town that offers programs for children after-school, on the weekends and during the summer. Our price range for a 1 family home is $600K max.

I would appreciate advise from families with experience moving to NJ from NYC.

Thank you.

It’s going to be very tough to find a 3 family home in a good school district in NJ. Most of the better ‘burbs here discourage multiple family housing,

^What zhelder said is true. You will get the short commute and multi-family housing you are seeking in the more close-in-to-the-city urban areas, but you aren't likely to get the best schools and programs for kids.

It also raised the question in my head--if you are looking to live in that type of area, why not just stay in Queens in the first place? Why do you want to move to New Jersey at all?

But answer the questions in the Sticky and maybe people can get a better idea of exactly what you need.

I realize I mistyped. We're looking for a 1 family, 3-bedroom home ... lol.

I should have also mentioned we're looking for yard space. We don't have that we're we live. We're currently in a co-op apartment.

Oh, lol.

Well, then, answer the questions in the link and people will try to help you!

One thing I can say, though, is that we get a lot of inquiries like yours, and they aren't realistic. As someone once said only exaggerating slightly--you won't have a 30-minute commute from NJ unless you live on the banks of the Hudson. Everyone wants good schools, an affordable house, and a short commute.

We do not have time travel machines to take you back 50+ years when that was possible. The stock answer is "pick two." You will likely have to adjust your commute time to something more realistic, which in all likelihood is a minimum of an hour.

I am in the same boat with my Fiance.
Looking to leave NYC but still work here.

Looking for more yard space and tranquility
we would want to buy something
budget is rougly $450K
No kids yet but working on it.
Looking for a decent school system.
We know the commute cant be less then 30 minutes to get all we want but dont want to do more then1:30 minutes by bus or train

We are looking for a family oriented area, with some nightlife but does not need to be clubs or anything but a nice local watering hole

thanks for any insight.

Maybe Leonia or Rutherford if you are ok with the schools. The commute time is the toughest requirement.

I have kids in both grade and middle school. I am also also a Realtor. I live in Short Hills, but one of my favorite towns is Cranford. $600,000 won't get you much - but it will get you in. There's a train and an awesome downtown.

As a realtor I know you can’t comment but I think the op needs to do greater research as a biracial family in Cranford. The demographics show a less diverse picture than other places. May not matter but should be mentioned as this is a concern for the OP.

$450k in those areas? Try 2x that, at the price range not many good schools.
