My hubby and I are recent empty nesters. We would be moving due to new employment for him. We would be bringing our soon to be 13 year old pittie as well. We would PREFER something to rent around the Parsippany, but we are open to surrounding areas. We are looking for a 2 BR/2 BA house minimum up to a max of $ 2,600 if this is even possible. We are looking for an area with other families in their 40’s.
I want to add that my husband’s job will have him travelling mostly out of state and otherwise a WFH position. Any/all suggestions are welcome. If clarification is needed as well, let me know.

In that general area I would check around Rockaway Township and White Meadow Lake area. I myself don't know what the current prices are but its 10 minutes or so west and usually one of the nicest areas.
West of that further you have Lake Hopatcong and other areas. Jefferson Twsp etc.

I have a friend who rented a 3-br house in Ridgefield NJ for $2600, but it's pretty basic, not too luxurious. I helped him look for a place since he doesn't speak English well and for a house it was hard to find much under $2200 or so. North Jersey is pretty rough.
In South Jersey (Camden County) my sister rents a very small 2-br house (about 700 sq ft) for $1250, but small houses (2-3/br without a ton of square footage) generally range from $1500-2200/month, with medium/large houses mostly ranging from $1800-3200.

Another option worth considering would be living in PA, maybe somewhere in the Poconos or Bethlehem areas about an hour away. Way lower home prices and property taxes. There are actually quite a few NYC commuters (a lot of city/public workers) who live on the PA side for lower cost of living and better schools than NYC public schools. It's a tough commute but making the NYC salary in that area is pretty nice. Would just depend if you like the area/people. My impression from going up there to ski, hike, etc a few times is there are a lot of vacation homes and retirement-age people but I don't know what the individual towns are like. The climate is comparable to Parsippany but cooler in summer and considerably heavier snow in the winter.
Again, North Jersey is going to be really high in most areas. Once you get to Burlington County and south the prices will get a good bit more reasonable (historically i.e. pre-covid, home prices have been about 35-40% lower here), though rents here have been super high since covid, though IMO the housing market seems like it has peaked out somewhat. It's about 1hr20min from Parsippany, but if the job is mainly WFH it may be doable. I'd also say the people and lifestyle are somewhat more relaxed and friendly in South Jersey (and tad better weather) which may be easier to adapt to, though it's still NJ/Philly so you still get the rougher edge. The part of PA I mentioned is a lot cheaper than South Jersey (particularly the property taxes) by comparison.
You might look in Florham Park. It’s in Morris County. There are at least two townhouse developments that are pet friendly and could meet your rental needs. It also doesn’t tend to flood. You really need to make sure you are asking about flood plains and flooding in the last 10 years or so. New Jersey gets both blizzards and hurricanes. Or in the case of Super Storm Sandy a hurricane/nor’easter hybrid monster. Knowing your flooding risk is important information!!!

I would always ask if youre in flood zone but Morris County is not known to flood unless you back into a river. Also hurricanes can hit anywhere on the east coast so its not a region specific concern.
Overall Morris County is a great place to live, and for the most part (do your due diligence) there arent places that anyone would say avoid. It does have the 7th highest income in the country so it does cost more for what you get.

I'm confused. In the subject line it says (Camden, Hopatcong: condo, vacation home, employment)
Camden and Hopatcong are at least 2.5 maybe even 3 hours away. Are you trying to live near an airport area? If so, Camden would be better as this area gets hits with more ice and snow.
The rent in Hopatcong has gone up like everything else in the state.
If it is an airport you need to be by, look into the Allentown PA area.
