Hello,

I recently moved into a new neighborhood where all the houses are very close together. My neighbor's trash can and my trash can are very close to each other, so when there's garbage collection, I usually take in my trash can.. but my neighbor's trash can is right there, what would you do? I can help them bring the trash can inside once a while but definitely not every time because i don't want them to feel it's my responsibility.

I am friendly with the neighbor, and we say hi to each other, but that's about it.

What would you do?

Nothing. I'd leave their can where it is. Don't create expectations or start a "tradition" you may not be willing or able to continue. If you happen to become closer friends in future and enjoy doing little favors like this for a friend periodically that's up to you, but I'd wait to see what develops first.

I agree, leave it alone and mind your own trash. Unless of course they ask once in a while hey I am going on holidays and if you dont mind bring it in I would say sure.

First world problems are the worst aren't they? Leave the can.

I work at home, and I actually take two of my neighbors trash cans in twice a week. One is an elderly couple (80's) and the other a single mom with a toddler. To me, it is just being a good neighbor. Both hasve thanked me numerous times and the elderly couple will occasionally buy me a pie or food item as a way of saying thank you.

For me, you get good neighbors by being a good neighbor.

I just had to move my neighbor's trash can from in front of my truck where the pickup crew left it. That's an every trash day thing.

Does it bother me? Well yes. Not the moving it back but that the trash crew can't walk four more feet to put it back.

I would understand that, and you are doing it for a reason, in my case, there's no reason to do it other than if we made a deal ahead of the time, which we never had a discussion.

I have decided not to do it unless i am asked or if it's windy or the garbage can was on the middle of the road for reason..

Thank you for your advice.

You should see a NYC street after the crew has picked up. Sometimes it looks like a hurricane hit the block.

I have.

I'm still processing "having a discussion" before you pull your neighbor's trash can in.
