Has crime gone up or was it always so bad?

In reference to when? Jersey City has significantly improved over the last 15+ years. Although, id say it only improved in certain areas.

Crime has gotten really bad in many American cities over the past couple years.

Communipaw and Bergen Hill are about as sketchy as it gets in JC. They’re rough, but not rough like the sketchiest areas of Newark, Buffalo, Baltimore or Philly. I’d even argue JC is safer than Boston to an extent (or at least it will be in the near future). Most of it is comparable to Queens (Jackson Heights in particular). There are parts of it that are visually unappealing and run down such as McGinley and Journal Squares, but I’ve lived in these areas and came home after working late night bartending shifts in the city. Never have I ever been a victim of a crime walking home from JSQ in the middle of the night. These areas in particular will be totally transformed as the heart of JC, ultimately making the city less dangerous than most major cities at that. I just think people struggle to see grit without automatically associating it with crime when it’s not always the case. Atlanta is so much worst for example but people move to that giant suburb in droves.

Good point. Just seeing more shootings in the areas. Waterfront is the safe bet. Just may take longer in JS and areas you mentioned are sketchy, MSquare Bergen Hill and West Side.

No idea what the actual stats are, but it's definitely gotten safer in the 12 years or so that I've lived here. They even tore down that derelict Detroit-style burned out building off of I-78 a year or two ago, and replaced it with.... luxury condos. Think that may be in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood, but not sure exactly.

Last time I drove through about a year ago, only DTJC is nice. The rest is the same JC it has been since the mid 90s.

It's much safer now. And the standard of living has risen.
