I currently live in Montclair and have since first moving to NJ 7 years ago. I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest, and I'm itching to move to a smaller, scenic town with easy access to lakes, hiking, biking, etc. The more it feels like the middle of nowhere, the better!
I work in NYC, which makes Montclair convenient. However, WFH has become permanent and I only need to commute into the city 1-2 times per week. My favorite things to do are hike, bird watch, etc., and this new work situation seems like the perfect opportunity to try a new town - only I'm not familiar with any other towns!
ANY suggestions would be helpful. I have a vehicle and am willing to commute up to 1.5 (possibly 2 hours) each way on the days I need to go into the city. I'd be renting and looking to spend no more than 1,800 on a one bedroom.
Budd Lake, Long Valley, Lake Hopatcong might work for you and should be in your budget.. lots of trails, lake front, mountain, wild life and other activities. I just treat it as my "Mountain Home in the Rockies kind of lifestyle without the hard lifestyle of rockies" in Jersey. For commute to the city use the Rockway Mall park and ride or Mount Arlington Park and ride or Train station or drive directly to North Bergen park And ride (takes 50 min to 1hr in an average with traffic) and then a NJ transit bus 18 min ride to PABT for $10 (with parking included). You can also stay in one of the condominiums or town homes around Rocakway mall to make your door to door commute to PABT within 1hr 10 min.

Thanks in advance!
Sussex County. Long drive, but for 1 or 2 X a week, may be worth it.
Passaic County is shaped like a badly-drawn figure out. The area with Paterson, Clifton, Passaic, etc., is more congested, but "upcounty", the northern part is almost rural in places. West Milford gets bears. But there are also horse farms and lots of woods.

Passaic County map needs to be redrawn, it really is oil and water between the parts of it.
