I live in Jersey City (next town over) and my friend bought a condo in Union City. There are a lot of threads here on Union City. It's very mixed racially and the schools are bad. You can't beat the commute to the city though, the bus will get you there in under 25 minutes depending on your stop. I think for a young person who is used to living in an urban area, you can get good deals on apts. and it's super close to Hoboken too if you like that scene.

Very large Spanish population, if you are not Spanish speaking, some of the stores are actually hard to communicate in. Historically, it was the most populous city per square mile in the country. Don't know if that has changed. My husband grew up there, he would not go back. The schools are awful and it does have some gang problems now. I know this because I know a lot of UCPD and there is a problem w/ some Central American gangs in town.

Union City is safer than the non-gentrified parts of Jersey City, by far.

They are building a very large school around 24th and Kennedy which looks promising.

The Spanish language barrier is somewhat annoying at times, but not as bad as the ignorant ebonics-talk one encounters from workers at a lot of department stores and fast food places in Jersey City.

I grew up in Union City for about 14 years and moved from there about 10 years ago, honestly..you couldnt pay me money to go move back!! The school system was and still is horrific, thank God, I made the most of the opportunity and went straight to college.

I only go there to eat some good spanish food and shopping..one thing about UC..if you can't find it anywhere else..you'll be sure to find it on good ole Bergenline Avenue!
