NorthJersey.com: Schools forced to subtract (http://www.northjersey.com/education/educationnews/Schools_forced_to_subtract.html - broken link)

Thoughts on this?

Has anyone seen real cuts in their school districts?

I really think it is time that the unions step up and take a cut (not happening, I know) and join the real world like the rest of us. As of the NJEA actually CARED about the kids.

My kids are not in Public School, but I have seen changes even there - County services that are provided for special needs students have been cut. My friends with children who are in our towns public schools have all given me examples of where things are being pared down or done away with due to the current funding crisis.

I just do not think it is remotely fair that we don't even consider touching the salaries/benefits of teachers when there is such a problem right now.

I know I'll take heat for it, but it is the truth. No other "industry" gets away with it.

I have yet to see any cutbacks where cutbacks should be made in my town. Our property taxes went thru the roof last year due to a new football/soccer/field hockey addition AND a new wing put on to accommodate same - okay, that was last year. What about now?

You are right, they wouldn't get away with it in any other industry.

The NJEA could give a hoot about the kids. Unions look after their worker bees (the teachers, not the kids).

Hoboken has the highest spending per pupil in all of New Jersey, and we are all aware how atrocious the Hoboken public school system is, but yet the taxes in this little twisted town keep skyrocketing. It's reality time for the NJEA. Suck it up, make concessions, and move on.

If your teachers were really that outstanding, the kids wouldn't be coming out of school dumber than a bag of nickles.

it's out of control, people have complained here before. And we all feel powerless!! I will say one thing when I left good old bergen county I was suprised to see that other areas don't have as much infustructure as Bergen County does. I mean towns that are 2 or 3 square miles with tons of cops and each having their own little elementary , middle and high school. SOme bergen county small towns have 2 elementary schools!!! Hillsdale comes to mind. Its kind nice to see others areas (county's) do not rape you as bad as Bergen!!! I mean your raped but not a full gang bang attack such as bergen. There are some towns with much better systems. The one good thing about leaving Norther Bergen County was that we were happy to see not the same sticker shock and a bit of a different set up just going 30 miles west. By the way we have no kids and are not having kids. So there are options!!

They don't. They care more about the coffee pots in the faculty room being fully loaded.
