Hey there everyone. My boyfriend and I are looking to move in together, but he works in Barrington, NJ (Camden County) and I work in Manhatten. We were thinking of looking around the Trenton/Princeton area so we could both have about an hour commute (I would take the train and he would drive).
Any ideas of areas/towns that are good for young people who still like to go out and have fun? We are looking to rent, but I don't know anything about the Princeton/Trenton area so any suggestions are welcome!
That is quite the commute. I think you are looking at more then an hour ride either way from Trenton. And believe me, you do not want to live in Trenton unless you carry an AK47 with body armor and well trained in urban warfare. Princeton is the opposite. How much money are you made of?
The last poster had a pretty good suggestion with New Brunswick. If you can go out a little bit to the Atlantic Highlands there is a commuter (no cars) ferry to Manhattan. That is a real nice way to commute. There might even be another ferry more south closer to I-195 which will go right to the NJTP or I-295 down to Barrington.
Spotswood, Jamesburg, Heightstown, Cranbury are all nice and still easy access to the NJTP. All pretty central.
If you both insist on this arrangement then you might have to give up a little night life close to home in order to get just the right central home base within an equall distance. New Brunswick can offer just about anything you will ever want as well as the Rt 130, 18 and 1 corridors.
Keep in mind that when gas goes back up to $5.00, and it will sure as we are breathing, will your weekly gas bill exceed your salary?
Bear in mind that the door-to-door commute to NYC from Princeton/Trenton is much more than an hour- the train ride itself is just under an hour if you catch the express train, but by the time you factor in getting to the station, waiting for the train, and getting from the train to your office, you could be 1.5-2 hours door-to-door, which gets old quick.
If he is always driving and you always taking the train... keep in mind that gas may do what is did a few month ago and shoot to $5 a gal. Thinking about that I would say to move closer to Barrington as to keep his gas bill lower. Your commute price won't change much whether gas go thru the roof or not.

Plus there is a waiting list for parking at the Princeton Junction train station that's several years long.

There's a park and ride just off exit 8A at the turnpike. Lots of buses for Manhattan and Wall Street.
So you could live in Plainsboro, West Windsor, Cranbury, Princeton etc and use the bus for your commute to Manhattan
Commuter Bus New York City, New Jersey Charter Bus Transportation, Bus Tours NJ NYC (http://www.academybus.com/commuters_PDF.asp - broken link) New Jersey Transit
Also, Coach USA buses pick you up from several apartment complexes in Plainsboro and they take around 75 mins to reach midtown
