Hi,
I'm planning a trip though NJ to points south and I want to use a route that will be the least painful traffic wise. I usually travel from upstate NY via NY thuway (87) to route 17, to the GSP and then to the NJtpk. I've breezed through some times and had horrible traffic other times.
Question:
On a weekday, what time of day does the traffic on the GSP subside in the afternoon/evening and the same quesiton for the tpk?
If anyone can suggest an alternative like 287 to 206 to rt1 to 295 or something else, please do!
Thanks,
Dave

there is no good viable alternative, your ideas would work but wouldn't really save all that much time. depending on where in upstate NY you are coming from one alternative would be to avoid the NY/NJ altogether by coming south via I 81
I would think my answer is standard. It is a trouble free ride if you time your presence to be traveling after 9AM and before 3PM. You can cover the entire stretch within between rush hours.
Dont even bother with your 206 idea. That is still just a Horse and Buggy Trail that the state refuses to update to something past 1940 standards.
Stick with your origional path but stay within rush hours and you will be fine. Now if you try and take the GSP on any weekend during the summer I will just say stay in NY. There will be no way to make any forward motion south bound on the GSP unless you rent a Chopper.
As long as you hit the GSP before 3pm you will be fine. NJT southbound is usually fine as well. Sometimes gets backed up at the 8A merge esp on Fridays. But if you are traveling in the afternoon - you will breeze by barring any accidents.
If you are just getting to GSP as 6:30 you will be hitting the tail end of commuter traffic. The thing that might slow you down is if there is an accident anywhere along the route on the GSP before you get to the Turnpike then you will sit for a while. An accident at 5:45 could slow things down considerably. You are travelling in the direction of commuter traffic at that hour so congestion is a problem. Also, this Friday begins a 3 day weekend for many so South Bound traffic could be heavier on that day (or lighter if people took Friday off to extend the weekend). See, it's very unpredictable.
The best route South unless you want coast towns is I 78 to I 81 You pay only one .75 toll at the PA border and no other tolls until maybe Fla. If you take 95 South it will cost you about $15 in tolls just to get to DC.
A person I know told me that 206 to 295 is not a bad way. Anyone know that route?
This is not an efficient way. 206 is mostly a dinky two-lane road full of trucks and traffic lights. Going through Princeton is a nightmare. And then once you hit 295 you will probably run into traffic in Camden County and have to navigate through the confusing 295/42/76 interchange. I'd stick with GSP to NJT.
