We are thinking of purchasing a house here - Can someone tell me if this is a safe area?

Looks like you made two posts on this subject, but for the record, pretty much all of Maplewood is safe -- check out the crime stats on City-data -- when you consider the sketchy towns it borders.

I did make two posts but I am new to this site and am not sure how to check out the crime data that would be relveant to the specific neighborhood within Maplewood. Overall, Maplewood appears very safe but I have heard not the best stuff about being close to Springfield ave and I want to know if I need to be concerned or if it just a rumor. Thank you for your advice and help. It is much appreciated.

hmmmm ... city-data usually has that sort of stuff, but I'm not seeing it for Maplewood when I checked.

You can try other sites, just google "crime rates" and you'll find a bunch of sites that will aggregate FBI crime data nationwide and allow you to compare crime rates of different towns. Best thing to do is compare Maplewood against a town you're already familiar with (in NJ or elsewhere) and get an idea of how they compare.
