For some reason I feel like I can get a better response from NJians than NYers. Anyone have experience in the High Falls, Accord, Stone Ridge or surrounding (near New Paltz) area?

We had a thought about renting out the house for a few years to see if we like "the stix" (1.5 hours away door to door). We have no kids yet, and I work from home. Financially it seems like it'd work out pretty well with plenty of extra $ going into the mortgage with the difference between what we'd get for rent and what we'd pay for rent. Of course it is not all about the financials, we're thinking we might enjoy the quiet, less pollution, local farms and co-ops, lots of streams rivers, lakes, hiking, etc. Seems like there's a few rednecks but that the gays, treehuggers and artists (sorry ) are actually starting to outnumber them. We found a cute house for rent, $1100. Seems reasonable.

Anyone have 1st hand experience in this area and how do you like it?

I know the area well and its a beautiful area. In stoneridge I used to eat at the Student Prince now its a french place its was really good German Food. Here is the deal, its boring. If you are happy to live with less choices, poorer quality in somethings, and a very Jewish area still and this is not being racist the area is still heavily Jewish and live in very quiet with little mental stimulation but alot of nature its great for you. I wouldn't personally its not a great choice to live but a great place for VACATION!!! There is very little action but trees. IT will seem great at first especially in the summer but once NOvember hits its boring. And mind you not too cheap either. NYS is not the cheapest place especially Ulster COunty.

Thanks.

interesting, i didn't notice any jewish people. Yeah summer is exciting. Lots of farms open with good donuts, and hiking. Lots of pretty water stuff. We walked right under "Rainbow Falls" on sunday at minniwaska (sp?). I can imagine it gets pretty boring and depressing in the winter.

We are big on fresh food, but didn't get a chance to check out the food co-op there.

I am not sure how different it is than here, for us, where about the most we might do in the winter is hit up Barnes and noble for coffee and a cookie and read a book.

Perhaps Marilyn is thinking of ORANGE County, home of Ellenville. Ulster County, places like Kingston, Hurley, Marbletown, etc are full of 'goyim'.

It's official, per the American Jewish Committee: the Jewish population in Ulster County totals 4,000 residents. Ulster County has 180,000 residents.

Orange County has 18,500 Jewish residents, approximately.

As a percentage of the population (2.2%), relative to the US at large, it's rather high:

Are you talking about 3407 Cooper Street - the french corner - this place is now up for sale. I have been talking about opening a place forever, maybe this is my calling.
