My roommate will be working near Grand Central Station at 45th and 3rd and I will be working in Roseland. I will be driving to work and he will take public transportation. We are looking at Jersey City since access to 280 seems quicker than Hoboken for me. What would be the fastest way for my roommate to get to work? Should he take the PATH to 33rd and take a bus down to 45th ?
I used to work on 45th between Third & Lexington.
When I was taking the PATH train, I would get off at 33rd St. and walk (30 minute walk).
From 33rd St, you can get on the N/R/W and take that to 42nd St/Times Square where you can transfer to the shuttle which will take you to Grand Central. I hardly ever did this because I knew that walking, it was 30 minutes guaranteed (not to mention saving myself the extra fare). With the subways, it was a total crapshoot--could be 20 minutes, or it could be 45 minutes (and yes, there were definitely times that the subway took longer than walking).
You can also take the WTC-bound PATH from JSQ to the WTC (11-minute ride), and walk to the 4/5/6 on Fulton St. (it's, like, a 2-minute walk). If you get on the 4/5 express you can get to Grand Central in as little as 15-20 minutes. Be prepared for super crowding and not being able to get on the 1st subway that pulls up, though.
Your friend should try different routes to see which one he likes best.

Another way is to take the Path to 14th(33rd st line) st and take the L train to Union Square and then take the 4/5 train which the next stop is 42nd st or the 6 train but it is local but somtimes the 4/5 line is backup so it is not always much faster then the 6 line.
I used to work at 41st and 3rd ave and it took me about 18-20 minutes to walk from the 33rd st stop to work
The way via WTC is longer than the mid town line

Thank you all. He will try a couple of different routes as suggested above.
