Sparta or Sussex are a much better choice than Hopatcong (just based on schools alone).

I agree w/the above user. If you are looking for a town based on the school system hopatcong is not the wise choice. There is just not enough money in the school system's budget. I moved to the area a few years ago and just pulled my children out of the school after advise from several teachers. I am now driving my children to a private school until we can move. Our next move will be based on the school system.

It is all really a matter of opinion. The school is safe and depending on what school you are comparing it to it is not bad. If you are someone that is already thinking about your child attending college and care about test scores and scholarships, gifted and talented programs etc., Hopatcong is not for you.

Sparta has excellent schools and you may still be able to find a smaller fixer upper and then you can add on with an addition in years to come. Stanhope also has decent schools. Newton's test scores are lacking yet the High School is not bad because Green Township and Andover residents attend bringing tax money along for the school's budget.
