Metro North is almost never late while NJ Transit is late all the time - at least 5 or 10 minutes. And don't forget that Penn Station is a total dump compared to Grand Central Station.

I've actually done this - it's not great getting to GC area from Millburn/Short Hills. We used to take a cab in the a.m. and the shuttle and then 1 train one stop at night. Sucks. Much better to west Midtown or downtown. Funny thing is one reason i'm in SH is because i used to work at the WFC. After living here two years, i ended up near GC. Now I'm near PS. I guess the point is if you're going to establish roots, you never know where you'll be 5 years out, so pick a town you like and deal with the commute. That all said, commuting on NJ Transit/PS is like commuting in a a third world country compared to Metro-North/GC .
