Every time I'm outside - in malls and other places, I never hear someone speak French. I love French language, where are our lovely Francais people? I always keep hearing SPANISH, SPANISH and SPANISH, and also Arabic now in mall.
The French are old immigrants. Germans make up one of the largest ethnic groups in the U.S., and you don't hear people commonly walking down the street speaking German.
The Spanish language is carried to NJ, NY, and many other areas by the influx of Mexican, Central, and South American immigration, both legal and illegal.

I hate to always give academic examples, but there is a lot of documentation that supports why immigration from what we might agree to call Old Europe doesn't happen any more. Immigrants from eastern Europe and Central and South America are coming now, and that partly has to do with their economies. What that means is that you will hear more Spanish, Portuguese, and Czech being spoken all over New Jersey. I really love it--it adds to the diversity of our state. There are very few reasons why people from western Europe--France, Great Britain--would immigrate here. Outside of your language questions, why are you so interested in French immigrants? That ship has sailed . . .
...or those speaking French. They're probably in or around the Newark airport because they're on their way to/from NYC.
