With all the money in this state and one of the wealthiest, wouldn't you think there would be a local station in this state????
All broadcast from NY, PHL, etc! Can anyone enlighten me?
I can never get an accurate check on weather...........................news.et c.......Of course I check internet but it's not the same!! (app.com, nj.com,etc,)
WWOR has their studios in Secaucus but they are still essentially a NYC station. Although out of all the NYC stations they do seem to cover the most NJ news.
We can't have local network television stations in New Jersey because the NYC and PHL affiliates are owned and operated by the networks themselves, as most of the major market affiliates are. Therefore they would never agree to a New Jersey station moving in and taking away half their viewers.
WMGM is a relic from times past before all of today's legalese existed with this stuff. At one time the "station" itself was simply a repeater for KYW (which at the time was an NBC affiliate). Eventually it became its own NBC affiliated station owned by Access.1 Communications. I briefly worked there a few years back and they have a good crew and have some excellent local news coverage for the four counties they serve. But they're hamstrung by the fact that they can't do live shots since they don't have microwave or WiFi capabilities so all of their news packages have to be pre-recorded. The anchor in the studio is live, of course, as well as the meteorologists and sports anchors. They've also tried to expand a bit over time into Ocean County but I believe WNBC cried foul, despite the fact that they never cover Ocean County as is, and a very good part of the county watches WCAU (NBC10 - PHL) anyway.
The only problem with News 12 is you can only get it with Cablevision or Comcast. If you have Directv or Verizon you're out of luck. (which is they way Cablevision wants it anyway). Verizon just started Fios 1 a few months ago that covers NJ news. It's very similar to News 12.

Yes, that's actually the only reason. The company that owns the station is actually more of a radio station owner. NBC40 is the only TV station it owns and they don't sink much money into it at all. I don't even think they're HD yet.
The rumor when I was there was that they were going to get a microwave truck from NBC10 in Philadelphia since they were converting to WiFi and getting rid of their old trucks but I don't think it ever happened. Most of the people who are there are pretty young and it's a starting job. Plus you get to mingle with the big-time people at NBC10 sometimes which is cool. A lot of the folks who work there actually go on to have pretty successful careers, some even in NYC and Philadelphia. But it's a long road.
