Hoboken is clearly the "ideal" place to be if you are a 20-30 something, but if your work is not condusive to living in Hoboken, what would be the top 5 towns north of there to live?
25 / female / public transportation great / would love easy access to Manhattan & Hoboken for weekend travel
I am just guessing from a map and estimating commutes. I would LOVE to live in Hoboken, but I am thinking the daily commute to/from Montvale will be a nightmare. I would love the commute to be 30 minutes or so.
I would love your input if you think Hoboken is a good option!

I see, I think getting to Montvale from anywhere in Hudson County Hudson County would be more than 30 minutes. If you really would love to be in Hoboken do it, you will only be 25 once. Yes the commute will be a drag but even if you lived in Edgewater you would only be 15 or 20 minutes closer to Montvale. I travel to Englewood everyday and the commute is about 25 minutes and it is easy as it is going against traffic, I think Motvale is about 20 minutes past that.
Ya, tacking on an extra 2 hrs a day to/from is never fun. Thank you so much for the great information. I think I may have to find a nice town inbetween with good public trans to Manhattan.

Edgewater has a ferry, I happen to think the ferry is the best thing ever. Fort Lee is close to the bridge. Good luck!
I think you need to decide what's more important, a close commute or a fun atmosphere to live in? If you want a close commute, you can get a place in in bergen county like ridgewood or westwood as suggested above. They have nice little towns where you can grab a bite and a drink.
If you want to live in a fun place with bars/restaurants/close to the city, then Hoboken is where you want to be and you'll have to learn to live with the longer commute. Edgewater and Ft. Lee aren't that close to montvale either so if you going to drive to Edgewater, you might as well drive another 10/15 minutes south and live in Hoboken. Edgewater doesn't really have much atmosphere. Nothing like hoboken.

This is truth. I tend to think of urbanism as a gradient on the map, with 10 being urban paradise and 0 being cows. On that scale, Manhattan is a 10, Hoboken a 9, and Montvale a 3.4. And the towns between Hoboken and Montvale decrease in value between 9 and 3.4 the farther out you go. That said, you'll have to sacrifice something. Either urban living day-to-day is more important so you'll deal with a longer commute, or a short commute is more important and you'll visit the urban areas on weekends. Or you'll split the difference and live in a TOWN in the suburbs with a main street, restaurants, etc., somewhere inbetween. Places like Westwood, Englewood, or Ridgewood would apply. Really anything in Bergen County with "wood" in the name would suffice.
This is excellent information. What does everyone thing about Weehawken? I figure if Im going to suffer the commute and enjoy Hoboken, then the only thing I worry about is having a car which is obviously a must. I read that I can reserve a parking space for about $200 in a garage, but are there cheaper options?
