I tip whenever the attendant goes above and beyond simply pumping gas. Usually only $1. Its much rarer now but i used to get asked all the time if i wanted my oil, tire pressure, washer fluid checked, windows washed, etc. I'm only 35.
Now, your lucky if the attendant even notices you are there. I typically give them about 30-60 seconds to come over to me. Any longer than that and I get out and pump it myself. Im too impatient. Screw the stupid law. If i get busted, I'll pay the fine and keep it moving.
Why on earth would you give a tip to a gas station attendant in the normal course of events unless of course he successfully performed CPR on your lifeless body.
It is very rare these days to have someone pump your gas and not be talking on the cell phone at the same time. How annoying is it to have the idiot ask you to move your car up 1 foot to reach the gas tank.
Slow???? Time comes to a stop at most of these stations. Don't ever be in a hurry and stop for gas. Best to bring a book as you could cover a chapter or two after your tank is filled and before the nozzle is withdrawn.
How about coming to the window to hear how much gas a customer wants. Counting change would be a nice skill to have.
Guess all the quick service, sunny dollars, free glasses and the complimentry window wash is only a distant memory. Gone are the days of free road maps and compressed air.
Gas stations of today have become the 'waiting room' of the road.
Maybe they all moved to south Jersey, because I run into nice and helpful gas station attendants all the time. I for one don't want self-serve, it's not cheaper, and how will it benefit the state to suddenly have tens of thousands of jobs cut?

Route 73 south in Berlin, Sunoco station.
I stop whenever I get up that way because of the guy that runs it.
He used to run the one in Pemberton but moved to Berlin.
Very nice, pleasant guy. Will be seeing him Wednesday.
I will pay the few cents extra just to see a smiling face.
