Boy would I love to have that bumper sticker. I have no idea how to pump gas and neither do our daughters that still live in So. Jersey. When they drive down here they have to ask someone to help them in every State, in every gas station. When we moved down to NC I decided not to drive here. I can drive in NYC, Philly & all over New Jersey, but not here. What we have experienced #1, no one knows the meaning of merging, if you are waiting to make a right hand turn and the car in front of you is also, look to the left if there is a car 2 blocks down the road the car in front of you "is not" going to move, in the So. it is called coutesy driving, (my husband on the other hand calls it something else). However, if you are backing out of a parking space in Sam's Club, the person blasting their horn, driving 25-30 mi. an hour down the lane has "the right away". John Denver sang a song about it, "Take Me Home"----
To the person that wishes you can have self serve because it is less expensive? Come on down here, we are at least .15-.20 higher at all times then in NJ. When you were at $3.80 a gal. a couple of years ago, we were already above $4.10, and we have the people that pull up to the pump, do not get gas, get out of the car and go into the g/s to get their beer and cigarettes, while we have to back out of the space and hope no one is coming behind you.
Remember, the grass is not always greener. Thank you for all of your responses, we really appreciate them.

All states have different taxes on gas. NJ happens to have one of the lower taxes. Obviously gas stations in NJ have to pay employees to pump gas. And I assume that expense is passed on to the people buying the gas. Just because NJ has cheaper gas than some other states doesn't mean gas couldn't be even cheaper if they had pump your own.

Look at the Fuel Tax by State. There is a reason why NJ is always cheaper than NC. It has nothing to do with self serve versus having gas attendant

While the tax part of this is correct, the expense part is not. It is not cheaper for gas stations to have self-serve because the insurance required for pump your own is higher than the cost of employees.
NJ has cheaper gas for one reason only..the oil tanker can be right off the river and deposit it in storeage tanks to be refined to gasoline..why the heck you think it stinks from exit 11 to exit 15 on the NJ Turnpike for last 50 years????

Everything I can find on the internet says it woud be cheaper. Do you have a link that talks about the insurance being more expensive?
I have to search when I get home. Do you honestly believe anyway that our gas would go down regardless? You don't think they'd make it up in higher taxes on gas (maybe to pay for the thousands of gas attendants now on the unemployment roles)?

Who knows. But my guess is they wouldn't touch the tax.
