Just curious. Does Jersey City really have a true downtown area in terms of shopping? Or is it just Grove Street and the surrounding area in addition with Newport Center Mall?

Or is it that Jersey City has "main streets" scattered here and there?

Thank you guys for the reply. So what streets in downtown would this be? I know Grove Street and Newark Avenue near the water are two but those are the only ones I know. Unless you count the mall.

That's what most people mean by the "downtown". Grove Street, Newark Ave near Grove and a couple of the streets that run parallel to Grove have some nice restaurants and shops.

I wouldn't really count the shops around Journal Square -- it's largely a collection of dollar stores.

There is Little India near Journal Square. It's not really a "downtown" but it's definitely worth a look for anyone who likes Indian food.

There are several main strips throughout JC. Journal Square, Central Avenue in the Heights, and various spots throughout Downtown.

For Downtown, it'd be Grove Street and Newark Ave as the main retail/restaurant streets. On the waterfront is where all of the corporate skyscrapers are, so that obviously has a very "downtown" feel (although after 7 pm it gets quiet when the corporate workers go home ... kind of like the Financial District in NYC).
