We just had a heavy monsoonal rain in Albuquerque, creating brand new puddles - and I was amazed at the sounds coming from these puddles! I stopped and took a quick video of them - you can see their throats bellow. The sounds they created are more like those wooden frogs sometimes found in tourist gift shops that you can make "croak" by stroking a wooden stick over the ridges. These are not the same sounds as in Clairz's video. http://youtu.be/JDHKyLYIOiE

My daughter caught some tadpoles today in a pond near our Albuquerque high desert home. There were some other critters in with them. They looked a lot like tiny horseshoe crabs with forked tails. They were about the same size as the tAdpoles. Any idea what they are?

We live in the older close-in NEH (Menaul/Carlisle) area of Albuquerque & a few years ago we put n 250 gal. preform inground pond with 3 goldfish. Last year one evening we were alarmed by the most awful blood-curdling noises coming from the back yard! With a flashlite in hand we heard the sound coming from the pond & there were two toads 'making out'! in the pond! Next day pond littered with strings of eggs. Later 100's of tiny black polywogs in the water. Odd, but one day ALL of the polywogs gone (too tiny yet to develop into toads & jump out & fish never bothered them)... where? Now thhis year the whole neighborhood is full of them & the sounds! How do they get in yards enclosed with cinderblock walls? This year the part of garden where I dump lawn clippings has ?depression all over in it... water from the hose saw one of the toads emerge... their home?! These guys are getting so huge... good feeding grounds I guess! Tame & dogs show no interest. Son on Westside found a toad with camoflage back markings ..different form ours here in NEH. Any idea what kind these newcomers are? I have some night pics of them & son has a good one of his newcomer. We are toad newcomers.
