They fought hard, but, it shows the team needs a strong coach.
Hopefully soon.

Hopefully, it won't take several decades of losing seasons...as was the case for UTEP's football team.

As for basketball, UTEP still goes on and on about their 1966 "Glory Road." How pathetic...

Well given all the scandals, physical beatings by the coach against a reporter, the most lousy record in NCAA division 1, and an opening loss to Oregon 72-0 I'd say he should've been fired at the end of last year. Personally I think UNM and NMSU for that matter should just downgrade to division II for football if that's possible. Why pay somebody six figures who just sees their 2 year tenure as a stepping stone to another more well known school? Hiring a few well known science professors specializing in aspects like solar power research and clean coal would pay dividends much more than some loud mouthed idiot coach.

Given the current state budget deficits, I can't see the state ponying up the cash to buy out the coach's contract (nor should they). It will have to be donors who foot the bill.

I wouldn't be so hard on UNM for getting blown out so bad to Oregon. Oregon is now ranked #2 in the BCS and has yet to lose a game.

TCU, who also handed UNM a 66-17 loss, is ranked #3 in the BCS and is similarly undefeated.

The rest of UNM's schedule was pretty tough as well. The only crappy teams UNM played were NMSU (who won by 2 points) and Wyoming (who lost by 3 points). Colorado State and UNLV were also pretty bad, but they beat crappy teams by healthy margins.

Not sure exactly how UNM ended up with such a brutal slate of opponents, but maybe it was just bad luck that ensured a 1-11 season vs, say, a 5-7 season.

It's a tough decision - pay a terrible coach to leave or keep him and lose as much or more in football revenues next season. Whatever happens, Krebs owes all taxpayers an explanation as to why he hired Locksley and why he agreed to such a contractual buyout payoff (and why he didn't dump him earlier when it might have been a for cause firing).

Indiana just fired its coach, after the team went 19-30 in 4 seasons. UNM would have to go 17-8 over the next two seasons to get to that 4 year record for Locksley.

TCU will leave the Mountain West Conference after 2011. So at least NM won't have to play them after next year.
