Just moved here and have been to Lawrence bros and Walmart and I did not see a seafood counter/section in either store. Is there a place to buy a side of salmon or fresh shrimp?

Thanks!

I don't know of any places. I usually get my salmon from Schwans. (sp)

You might try REED's MEAT MARKET - 118 E Hwy 70, west side of highway just past the intersection with Sudderth going east. I know people who buy ALL their meat there because of the quality.

Also there is a small market in the 200 block of Sudderth that advertises fresh seafood - or used to. Mario's Market on the north side of the street, set back a ways and easy to miss. Directly across from the hospital.

Another place to try is Thriftway on Mechem, just north of the intersection with Sudderth. Thriftway is a cheaper and a better choice than Lawrence Bros. for all grocery needs.

Considering how far Ruidoso is from any ocean I would be surprised to find any fresh fish available.

It was always available in KC which is in the middle of the country. I think its the size of the city as well as location, that might put a limit on what I can find. I plan on perusing the above stores this weekend and giving an update in case anyone else ever wants to know.

In years past there were truckers who drove fish from the Gulf Coast into the El Paso area. As I recall, it was available fresh on a daily basis. I also seem to recall the same sort of service to the meat market on US-70 in Ruidoso at one time, but have no first-hand knowledge of fresh fish availability today.

I was being amazed at our ability to ship fresh frood almost anywhere. I'll bet you could get live Maine Lobster in Ruidoso. Astounding.

I can get them just by driving to the ocean about 40 miles away or at the lobster tank at the local grocery store. Expensive though.

I don't think they have it any longer, but Walmart's grocery dept (Ruidoso Downs) used to sell LIVE lobsters that were kept in a tank full of salt water. It could still be there, not sure. I'll have to notice next time I shop.

Walmart once sold fresh fish too, but that has been replaced by pre-packaged "fresh fish" (not frozen). I used to buy the salmon but it was too bland tasting for me - probably treated with preservatives, and water to increase its weight, as are their pre-packaged meats.
