Visa Versa here. I made them last year but am thinking of skipping it this year. I still have a few in the freezer. It is a tradition, like so many others, but for the most part, the family doesn't even really like them. I took a few from last year, mixed them with some beans, meat and green chile plus some cheese and have made sorta a tamole pie for Christmas eve. It is in the freezer.
One of my lady friends has a tamalada every December and we lady friends all go. We take turns making tamales assembly line while eating, drinking and making merry.

Sounds like the best way to make a LOT of tamales....
I have made tamales at home......but it has been many years. How do you divide it into 2 days work? Sounds like a good idea. I need to find a lower fat way to do it, using olive oil and lean meat. Possible?
PS we love the La Luz area and will be back after the holidays to check out relocation details, housing, etc. we are looking online and don't find many smaller homes in our price range; 65,000 to 95000 dollars.

We used to do this at our church in Belen. That is how I started making them. We would cook, assemble, eat but not the drink. That came later, when we went to someones house.
