The Alamogordo area is our second choice. Socorro still tops the list.
Same here!

One posible solution is for me to fly to NM, get a motorcycle and live in the cheapest hovel I can find during the winter and fly back to NH for the summers.
As you probably know by now, I love motorcycling in NM, but in winter, it's just too cold to ride one much of the time, although since you're used to NH, you may not think so. That wind chill will get you!
We are actually planning to move to La Luz (or even Laborcita Canyon in the next 1 to 2 years. We almost made it in 2008, but lost all our savings in the market crash. Laborcita Canyon is gorgeous. We are going out in May to actually walk around the streets of La Luz and get a feel for it.
Climatically, I think High Rolls would be just about perfect, but it isn't easy to find anyplace to live there for a reasonable amount. After Fort Worth's heat and humidity, I think I can take summers in Socorro or Alamogordo/La Luz fairly easily. At least it cools off at night there.
Responding to your posting on High Rolls. We looked seriously at High Rolls but were stopped in our tracks when we were told that you could not, no way, no how, have a mobile home there. Pretty archaic, I think.
Just wanted to clarify this distinction. When we were looking at property in High Rolls, we were told in no uncertain terms that you could NOT put a mobile home of any kind there.
In Laborcita Canyon, however, it is just the opposite. We had a contract on a piece of property and the realtor and the mobilehome dealer were totally positive about putting a doublewide on the property. In fact, there are mobilehomes all over Laborcita Canyon, and we have driven the area many times.
Can you tell me which issue of New Mexico Magazine had the article on La Luz? We're considering a move there and would love to see it.
We are, too. I will be looking it up. Have you found a house yet? We are looking online, at smaller homes, lower priced, and haven't seen much there. May end up in Alamo, where there are many homes in the under $100000 range. Alamo will be fine, near the forests, mountains, friendly folks and more.
Hi there. Please let me know if you find the issue in NMM which talked about La Luz. And thanks for being willing to do that. I'll see if I can find anything in their archives also.
We still have property in Florida to sell (that may take awhile!) and we'll probably have to rent when we first get out there, but that doesn't stop me from looking at property online.

Looked at online New Mexico mag archives but didn't see an article on the town of La Luz.
