Double H - sounds like a great read that I would find a treasure. I like the part about the sanitorium for tb patients at Cedar Crest, east of Albuquerque. And I love the history of it all - how mountains, valleys, towns and places came to get their names. Thanks so much for that, I will be buying this book from somebody, it very well may be from Amazon.com.

I lived in New Mexico in the early 1980's and bought my copy at that time. Some great information here about towns, mountain ranges, valleys, etc., and why they were named that way. Does that book give you some ideas in regards to what you want? Yes. A couple examples is the valley Jornada Del Muerto, the vast area southeast of Socorro as the book gives some information about. Same thing with Cedar Crest, east of Albuquerque, which apparently had a sanitorium for tuberculosis patients there.

It's a great read!
Thanks for the suggestion. I ordered a copy and look forward to reading it. I like to read about how things are named. There is a street in SF named Zepol. Everyone says "Zepol"--what kind of name is that? Then I learned it's Lopez spelled backwards. Lopez is in the same area as Zepol. I'm guessing the Lopez family named the streets.

Come prepared for below freezing temps--winter's not over. And, you can get snow storms and slippery roads in El Malpais. At least in March you won't have to worry about rattlesnakes.

Those times will be fine. Like malamute said a couple days ago, it is warming up. In southeast New Mexico, it already is warming up as temperatures from two days last week were in the low 80's in the Carlsbad area. In fact, their temperatures this weekend will push to the 90 degree mark, then fall maybe 20 degrees early next week according to The Weather Channel's charts. Springtime, gotta love it!

Alright, the times approaching quickly for this trip. Below, I've listed all the little places I have in forecast, while directions to some are scarce, I'm sure someone will point me in the right direction when the time comes. I read about a place called Wagon Wheel, does anyone know where it is exactly, I cant seem to locate in on any sort of map. If you care to add anything else that I would absolutely love, fire away.
