This is exactly correct. There is no reason whatsoever to take 25 south of Albuquerque. Even taking the Hatch cutoff, it is so much longer going that way, like 3 hours longer or more.

My post is long winded (#3) but I kept the winter type driving destinations in mind. And I've been on I-40 plenty of times in my day and I can assure everybody that there is always a possibility of snow in Holbrook in late March. And Flagstaff? Heh heh heh, three years ago last March 18th I spent two and a half days at the Economy Inn at Flagstaff when anywhere from three to four feet of snow buried the town. Not that I dislike Flagtown, on the contrary, I go through there annually, nice town.

I DO like the suggestion of angling off from Holbrook on state highway 377 and going through Payson and it indeed hooks up with state hwy 87 which brings you to Country Club Dr. When you get to U.S.60 on CC drive there are 2 Motel 6's there I stay at as there are people I know personally who have businesses in that part of the Phoenix area. Mesa Arts Performing Center is only a few minutes away from the motels, have been to some concerts there. I know the area well!

The other way would be to stay on 77 out of Holbrook and go through Snowflake, Show Low, wind your way down Salt River Canyon before you drop into Globe. Mesa is another 45 minutes from Globe. A good portion of both of those routes are two lane roads. It would be helpful if the OP could weigh in regarding being comfortable with a two lane road or staying on the interstates exclusively.
