Please advise.

Go outside more. You'll see snakes and see that most are more scared of you than you are of them. Go looking for snakes, so you can find them and get over this crippling fear more quickly. Go to pet stores and zoos and look at the snakes.

It's really not a bad idea from Deserterer, because, as it is, if you do happen to come across a live snake you're gonna absolutely poop your pants. Or have a heart attack. A little desensitization would help in this area, I would think.

In Southern NM, in new housing developments in the DESERT, many encounter snakes in their yards, on patios. Their habitat has been encroached upon...A couple of years ago I went out to my patio and my dog was rolling and squirming near something, almost in a kind of ecstatic frenzy. I moved him out of the way and found some unusual ‘scat’ (animal excrement). It was surrounded by mucous and formed in long (3 to 4 inch) flattened rectangular segments. I had never seen such scat. It was not my dog’s poo. I couldn’t see how it could be toad poo either and that was the largest critter I had ever seen on my property besides quail or roadrunner. I was convinced that it was from a snake. I keep meaning to put a bell on my patio door or to at least make more noise before I step out on the patio...

The only rattler I have actually seen was in northern NM in late October. I was driving up to ABQ and pulled off onto the shoulder to get a photograph of the mountains to present as a gift to someone. I pulled over, then backed up to get just the right shot. I got out of the car and walked around the front to the passenger side and snapped the picture. I walked back to the driver’s side and as I reached the front driver’s side wheel, I felt a lump under my sandal. I looked down and saw that I was standing on a rattler’s head. Apparently, I had run over it, then backed over it, finally stepping on it. So... I snapped another picture. I have never since, nor will I ever, pull off onto a shoulder and leave my car...

Living in unnecessary fear is also an option. If you lived in Nunuvat it would be one thing. But living in NM being afraid of snakes is like living in Iowa being afraid of corn. Its gonna turn up on your plate some day.

Yeah Desserter I agree. I also am aware that I can get desensitized. I have studied zoology. In the lab I could carry around jars containing snakes, well sadly they weren't alive.

You'll desense well. Focus and be aware of what's making up your surrounding area. And listen for that rattle and hum!
