oktazcat - I suggest taking the back road NM 52 to Cuchillo, Winston and Chloride. They are on my list for our next trip.

I know the owner of the new coffee patio pretty well and in fact I'm having
breakfast with him this morning. He's still trying to stay open for business
but it's been slow going. He does have wi-fi but he's talking about charging
for it's use. So far he's only had a few customers and most have stayed
for a few hours using the wi-fi and only purchasing one cup of coffee. If
things do not pick up he might not be able to keep it open. I'm pretty sure
at this time he's pretty discouraged about the whole thing but he might
stick it out. I hope he does because I also like the idea of using the
wi-fi while having a cup of coffee. I'm sure you could find more places
in Las Cruces and I know of a good place in Socorro as well. Maybe I'll
find out more about the coffee patio and the owners intention this morning.

When i was down there several weeks ago i was having lunch at Subway and it was dead in there so i got to talking to the staff about business in T or C and they said it was way down everywhere in town as they thought it had to do with gas prices keeping tourists home. There were $4.02 a gal when i was there.

Went out there a couple of weeks ago for the first time. The museum in Chloride was open (think it might be weekends only, but check), and the owner was a great 'tour guide'. Not that it's a big tour, but he tells you all the interesting stuff- about all the interesting stuff-, so no reading required (I'm lazy that way). Interesting history! The drive was nice, and I also recommend this drive, but only after you've seen everything else there is to see in the area, as there's not a whole lot to see out there.

I thought maybe you lived in the T or C area anomoly. Yes gas is now
about $4.09 per gallon in town and yes it has hurt a lot of the local
business's and I'm pretty sure it will get worse before it gets bettter.
I did spend some time with the owner of the patio coffee shop (if we are
talking about the same place) and he sounds like he is going to give it
one more try before closing up for good. So far he hasn't had enough
business to make it worth while but he hired a new person to run it
yesterday so maybe things will turn around and yes there will be wi-fi
and it may be free but it may not. I told him that T or C is such a low
income town that the wi-fi will not be a draw unless it is free and perhaps
he could charge a nominal fee after the first two hours of use. It seems to
me that there are a lot of people leaving T or C now or maybe I'm just talking
to lot's of folks that have put their houses up for sale. Most say the same thing and they are moving to be closer to better shopping/medical and many
are just flat bored. If you are looking for laid back then I would think that
T or C would fit the bill pretty well. I keep wondering if things will change
with the new Walmart opening in August. It will be one of the first modern
things in this town even though many are against it. I'm not crazy about
Walmart myself but there are things that I would like to buy that I just cannot
find here in town. Anyway hopefully the patio coffee shop will stay open
for business.

Thanks GregW and Anomaly for the suggestions. I have actually driven NM 52 several times when I was last in NM and also visited Chloride, although the museum was closed. I stayed at a guest ranch way, way up in the Black Mountains and the only way to get there was via NM 52, over to NM 59, and then NM 61, which is miles and miles of poorly graded gravel road. I had never been in the mountains so the first drive up was nerve racking with all the switchbacks and plunging valleys. It was beautiful scenery though but watch out for the elk at night as they will jump right in front of your vehicle. We had a very close call with a huge buck which left us shaken and determined not to make any more drives after dark. I'm excited to hear about the Coffee Patio and will keep my fingers crossed that it's still open in five months time. I have mixed feelings about Wal-Mart in general but maybe having one in T or C will spur further economic growth. I wish the space port was completed so I could visit that but it will have to wait for a subsequent visit. Any other hints or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Had breakfast this morning again with the owner of the patio coffee shop.
I'm assuming that we are talking about the same coffee shop on north
date street. Anyway he is going to try to keep things open but he's been
advised to make a nominal charge for using the wi-fi. In fact it wasn't so
nominal and I told him from my experience the people of this town cannot
afford what they are charging in Santa Fe for wi-fi so he might reconsider
what he will actually charge. I also think the increased price of gas and
food will make it a little difficult for him to get his business jump started
as this is a very poor community and some people are stretched to the limit
already. Then when we all turn on the network news we hear more bad news
that gas could be at $5, $6 and even last night $7 per gallon. If this happens
it might not be such a pretty picture for all of us and especially in small
and very poor communities. Hopefully the media is stretching the truth
about the upcoming gas prices. I forgot to add that the patio does have
some plug ins for your computer so you don't have to run your batter down
so it might be worth paying a little to help the owner survive in his business
venture. Other than that there is the senior center where they do have
free wi-fi but the room inside is very limited but you can sit outside but no
electricity.
