My wife and I drove over (from Las Cruces) to visit the museum in Deming today. She has wanted to do that for the past two years. I have not searched the forum to see when this museum might have been mentioned in the past.

We were very pleased with the museum. The building is well maintained and the displays are quite varied and there must be something of interest for most every one. I stopped and spoke with two guys who were down on the floor looking at the underside of an antique car. They had spent a good bit of time down there on the floor.

The pottery, "geode", and doll displays are extensive. Many other displays were of interest. In a very narrow niche, a pre WWII "ham radio" transmitter was quite interesting to me, but I realize most folks would barely notice it (even though it was at least five feet tall and two feet wide).

We highly recommend a visit if anyone finds themselves passing through Deming.

Chuck

Wow, I'd sure notice the ham radio transmitter, being a ham myself (AA5L)! So what did you think of Deming itself? I'd love to visit it and the museum. I poked around in the museum website and couldn't find the transmitter pictured.

Thank you for that interesting post. The building itself pre-dates WWI, making it a historic relic in its own right.

Default Deming itself

Yes, I thought of you when I posted the reference to the rig! We have never spent time in Deming, just passed through many times. Yesterday we did not see much of the town, just headed straight in to the museum and straight back out. For people who like small towns, I would suspect it is really a nice place. I know there are people who hate it, but that is the case with any location.

I think I would have enjoyed living there when we were younger. We lived in Socorro a total of 17 years off and on and thought it was great for raising a young kid. Not so sure about high school age kids though. Of course Socorro has the college which probably produces some distinct differences between the two towns, but otherwise they probably have a lot in common.

In retirement we felt we wanted a larger town so we ended up here in Las Cruces.

p.s. for AA5L: The owner and user of the rig in the pre-WWII years was W5DVL, Jamie Wilson, but I do not find any info on the web other than a few hits for lists of old QSLs. I could not find any images of his QSL though.

W5UXH: Thanks for the info. I'm looking hard at Socorro and Alamogordo as places to live. Socorro has the advantage of being within a reasonable distance of a big city, while Alamo is closer to the high cool Sacramentos.
