Sure it is. The cost of operating a vehicle is about the same whether you're using it as a deductible expense or for non-deductible activities like commuting.

I was thinking you were suggesting the OP could use
the tax deduction when, in fact, you were just measuring
the dollar cost of the commute.

Of course, the IRS doesn't allow a deduction for your time.
I couldn't care less about the money. I can always make
more of that.
