Just a heads up. Seems like the skunks are out in force this year. This is the start of the breeding season so they are smelling up the neighborhood and the females are looking for dens. Lot's of folks with skunks under their houses right now. Remember to watch your dogs, cats, etc.

They like the spaces beneath my wood pile!

When I set my "live trap" to catch feral or stray cats, I often trap a skunk instead. Secret is to drape an old blanket or large cloth over the trap and carry it to a spot where the skunk can be released. They are fun animals to have around if you can keep them from smelling up the place.

My dog got sprayed in the face by a skunk in our back yard about two years ago.

No, tomato juice does not work as stated.

Skunks can jump up on a five foot wall.

No, I don't leave my dogs in the yard unattended, that's why we know the above, we watched...

Skunks seem to like to prowl about two or three hours before sunrise.

Saw a skunk on my porch once about two or three years ago!!! Scary experience... They seem to be out in record numbers this year... There's even more out on the rural highways then there usually is.

Woolite works best for getting rid of the odor. I keep a bottle handy all the time, even use it in the power washer to keep the truck smelling a bit better.
As long as you move slowly and talk slowly you can do like Jaxart said and cover and then relocate them. That or use a "tube" trap.
Kind of odd that I have done close to 50 skunks this year already and have only caught 1 incidental coon. Maybe a down year for the coons as this number is usualy around 50% of the skunks caught.

Here is a couple of pictures of releases. For the most part as long as you don't scare them or corner them they won't spray. Frequently I have to shake them out of the trap. The 3rd picture this one had turned and started stomping his feet at the one in the trap next to him. Yes, I held my breath for a minute. Figured they were going to get into it and spray each other with me standing there. The 4th picture is a spotted skunk. Native to NM but not seen very often. They are VERY docile. This one was caught in a garbage can, picked him up by hand and put him in a cage to reloacte him
