Okay thank you so much for the directions! Way more concise than what Yahoo! says (which is downright strange).

I look forward to the drive and can already tell it seems a lot busier than most NM highways (which are practically empty). I'll watch for the Kneeling Nun

I hope to be able to visit S.C. soon, and again, thank you for the info!

What a lovely way with word, _yb,

I know several people who live or lived in Silver City--young, energetic, etc. One attended the Uni--and misses it like mad.

Follow the silver brick road and enjoy!

I just love the Mogollon mountains there with Lake Roberts and Gila Cliff Dwellings. I can't believe how many people up here in ABQ have never heard of the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Real beautiful mountains and you can go on and on all the way across to Arizona to Phoenix and up to Flagstaff as this range is huge...

When you drive interstate-10 from Las Cruces all the way to Tucson and to Phoenix you see a continous mountains on the north side along the interstate (375 miles ?).

I hear ya...I'm really surprised that Silver City is not exploding with retirees and artists and big city escapees (california) as its a cool place to be. Also i believe since Copper prices are high again that the mines there are at full employment.

Try taking the back way on U.S.180 to Reserve and then over to Datil (NM 12) then to Socorro (US 60) but some of the views are awsome. Especially the area where 180 splits off to go to Alpine, Arizona as the Pine trees are so thick i'll roll my windows down (summer) and just smell all the pine for miles and miles. Think of fresh cut christmas trees. Hard to believe your in southern NM as you think your in Idaho/Montana....

Harry O, I have been that way, from the other direction. It was decades ago, and I can tell you it was even more beautiful then. I saw with the eyes of a child, and it was magic.

I love the Alpine, AZ area, too.

You have taken me back in time. Thanks! :-)

Default one plug

Don't know if it's still there, but my wife and I spent 3 nights in Silver City two years ago and our favorite place was called "Shevek & Mi". We went there the first night, went somewhere else the second (some sorta-OK Mexican place) and then went back to Shevek the 3rd night. Excellent food, really good and different flavors with the different entrees. Nice wine list as well. We're spoiled living in Chicago in that oftentime we go to different places around the country and feel the food isn't as good as we have at home--Shevek & Mi was outstanding.
