Check the existing Silver City threads. My impression is it is a slowly gentrifying old town shifting to art and leisure as its major occupations. It is a very neat town in a stunning location. Like most of New Mexico.
Northanna,
My wife and I moved to Silver City for retirement about 17 years ago from Michigan. We enjoy it here. We do not belong to any of the clubs or groups but there are many available. We find the people of all faiths, races, and income level quite friendly.
I know of no problem with phone, electric, TV, cell phone, nor any utility. Cell phone service and over the air TV can be spotty up in the Gila Mountains north of Silver City. We have camped in an RV 15 miles north of Silver and there was no TV or cell phone service.
To put things in perspective, we are in our 70's and may very well have different likes and dislikes than you. You must come for a visit. I will try to answer questions that you have..............Jim
40ford is right. There is a lot of good info in the previous SC threads. I've been here about 13 yrs and it hasn't grown much. People come to get away from it all and find they can't live without the mall a good library, or more restaurant choices, so they go elsewhere. The population has remained fairly steady over the past decade.
There's lots to do- especially in summer- something goes on every weekend. People are open and social, and we now have 3 or 4 coffee houses where people gather to socialize. Javalina seems to be a favorite.
Please feel free to DM me if you have more questions...
silversurfer hit the nail right on the head, I've had real estate customers looking to find a place to slow down and in a few cases it was just a little too slow of a pace here. What a setting though, nice little art town with a university surrounded by over 3 million acres of forest.
No, I won't be able to get there next weekend, unfortunately. An annual blues festival doesn't indicate a year-round musical scene, although it would be fun to be there. I'm wondering whether anyone makes a living playing there (or in the vicinity).
There are several place in town where they have live, local musician playing evenings- some every evening. I am not "in the know" since I prefer to be home in the evenings.
KOOT the local alt radio station might be of help. Welcome to KOOT 88.1 FM
Thanks. I'm very early in my planning, having not decided where to go yet. I'm thinking somewhere between Socorro, NM and Alpine, TX, but Silver City is also a possibility. I just don't know enough about it, having never been there.
can someone tell me why silver city
is a good place to retire?
