Next week, my girlfriend and I will be taking our oft-delayed trip to New Mexico; Socorro, specifically. I'm hoping to attend NMT in the future, and this trip is very much to check out the town, to get a feel for the pace of life there, etc. So what are some "can't miss" parts of Socorro? Restaurants, attractions, shops that are integral to the town's experience. Any suggestions?

Socorro Springs restaurant and brew pub right off exit 150 is pretty good. The
Owl Cafe and the Buckhorn on rt 380 a few miles south of Socorro are quite
famous; the Owl because it's been there a million years and was a hangout for
the scientists working on the first A-bomb and the Buckhorn because it was recently
featured in a TV challenge for world's best green chilli cheeseburger (it won).

The Bosque del Apache wild life refuge is right there off 380, also.

For me Socorro is a fuel and food stop so I know nothing more about it.

Ditto to all the things Mike mentioned...except we have not been to the Owl Cafe...only Manny's Buckhorn Tavern...and the green chile cheeseburgers there were great!

The Bosque del Apache is not to be missed.

And I would also recommend a trip out to the Very Large Array. It's about 40 miles west of Socorro, but you drive through pretty country ... and the VLA itself is amazing.

Also, we had a very nice dinner (and live music) in The Stage Door Grill right off the plaza in Socorro.

Enjoy your trip!

Socorro is one of the places on my list to relocate to, so I'll be very interested in forthcoming comments about the place.

What kind of music was being performed at the Stage Door Grill? If I move there, I'll be looking for musical opportunities.

catman -- It seems that the owner and his wife had a small band (mostly guitars and a drummer) and they regularly play in the evening at the Stage Door. The night we were there, they had several musician friends join them for different songs. Looked like they were all having a good time.

I wish I could remember anything they played, but the only song I can recal was "Me and Bobby McGee" ... and something by the Beatles. I'm a lot of help aren't I? haha Oh...I do know they played "Standing on Shaky Ground" by Delbert McClinton - I remember that because he's one of my favorites.

I would say they generally played light country and some soft rock classics.

They weren't youngsters -- so it was nothing modern.

My husband and I went to Socorro to check it out, during a week long trip. (we live in far eastern nm). Socorro really wasn't much. I guess I had anticipated that it would be more. It's a small town.

If you live in Socorro you will probably include Albuquerque in your urban recreation plans.

Absolutely. That is one of the main things I like about Socorro. It's within a little over an hour of Albuquerque, but sufficiently removed. The best of both worlds, perhaps.
