In Colorado and Arizona, and maybe in Texas also, the farmers give people the option to share in the upkeep of the cow for a certain amount of money every month, and in exchange they get "free milk and butter" etc. Therefore they are not 'selling' the milk. They are allowed to give it away though, so if someone in NM has a cow or a few cows, they can use this system. It's better if the farm is close to the city you live in. So if anyone has a cow out there, I hope you contact a raw milk provider in one of the other states and get the scoop on how it's done. Just Google to find them.
The reason milk from the big dairies has to be pasteurized is because the cows can live in unsanitary conditions in fenced in dairy yards. Cows that roam free and eat mainly grass have bacteria fighting enzymes right in the milk. Grain fed cows milk has one third of these enzymes, and therefore is not as safe. Also don't believe everything you hear from the Feds. Do your own research and learn the truth.
I know this is an old query, but, unless I missed it, no one seems to have mentioned De Smet Dairy Farms in the Bosque Farms/Los Lunas area. It's a small, family-owned dairy operations, and one of the best I've ever seen. They are the only dairy farm in NM to pass intensive, voluntary federal health and safety inspections with the highest possible rating. All their milk is from A2 cows and it's delicious. While they can't sell raw milk in Albuquerque any more, you can go down to the farm and get it, or make arrangements to meet the delivery person in an area where it is legal to sell it. https://www.desmetdairy.com
